Male adult Wistar rats (Harlan Italy, S.Pietro al Natisone, Udine, Italy), 230-250 g, were used. The rats had free access to standard pelleted food and water and were maintained at temperature of 22 1C with a 12 h light/dark cycle. All experimental procedures conformed to the "guide for the care and the use of Laboratory Animals published by the US National Institute of Health (NIH publication NO: 85-23, revised 1996), according to the animal welfare regulations of the Italian local authorities (Ethical Committee of the University of the Studies of Milan, Italy).
